Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 slices sturdy sandwich bread, sourdough, or brioche Whole-grain adds texture; gluten-free works too.
  • 2 slices smoked Gouda cheese Prefer thinly sliced for even melting. Substitute smoked cheddar for stronger smoke flavor.
  • 1/2 apple thinly sliced Use crisp varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji. Pear provides a softer, sweeter alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon honey Drizzle lightly for sweetness. Maple syrup is a good substitute for deeper flavor.
  • for grilling butter Room-temperature butter spreads easily; olive oil or mayonnaise can be used for a different crust.

Instructions

Assembly

  • Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  • Layer the smoked Gouda cheese on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread.
  • Arrange thin apple slices over the cheese for even coverage.
  • Drizzle honey over the apple slices to add sweetness and aid caramelization.
  • Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up, aligning edges firmly.

Grilling

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat until moderately hot and shimmering slightly.
  • Place the sandwich in the skillet, buttered side contacting the pan to begin browning.
  • Grill until the exposed side is golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes depending on pan and heat.
  • Flip the sandwich carefully and grill the other side until golden and the cheese is melted, approximately 2 to 3 minutes more.

Finishing

  • Remove the sandwich from heat and let it cool slightly to stabilize the melted cheese.
  • Slice the sandwich diagonally for an attractive presentation and easier eating.
  • Serve immediately while the cheese is warm and the crust remains crisp.

Notes

Use thin slices of smoked Gouda to ensure even melting. Pat apple slices dry to prevent excess moisture. Start with medium heat to allow cheese melting without burning the bread. Allow sandwich to rest for a minute after cooking for cleaner slicing.
