  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano Fresh oregano can be substituted for a more intense flavor.
  • To taste Salt and pepper Always adjust according to preference.

For Serving

  • 4 Pita breads Serve warm for best taste.
  • 1 cup Tzatziki sauce Homemade or store-bought.
  • 1 Tomato, sliced Substitute with diced bell peppers for a sweeter flavor.
  • 1 Cucumber, sliced Optional to peel for a softer texture.
  • 1 Red onion, sliced Shallots can be a mild alternative.
  • To taste Lettuce Any leafy greens like spinach or arugula can replace lettuce.

Preparation

  • Season the chicken with olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  • Place the seasoned chicken in the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours until tender.
  • Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.
  • Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet or microwave until pliable.
  • Assemble the gyros by placing shredded chicken on the pita, generously topping with tzatziki sauce, and adding sliced tomato, cucumber, red onion, and lettuce.
  • Serve the gyros warm and enjoy!

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the chicken in the seasoning overnight. Use a digital thermometer to check chicken doneness; it should reach 165°F internal temperature. If making ahead, prepare the chicken and toppings separately for freshness. For a crispier texture, toast the pita before serving. Experiment with additional toppings, such as feta cheese or olives.
