Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 2 slices Bread Any sandwich bread works; sourdough or Italian loaf adds flavor
  • 2 tablespoons Pizza sauce Use jarred or homemade; marinara is a good alternative
  • 1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded Low-moisture mozzarella melts best; fresh shredded is ideal
  • 3-4 slices Pepperoni Substitute with salami, ham, or roasted vegetables for vegetarian option
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil Use extra-virgin for flavor; neutral oil will brown similarly
  • Italian seasoning To taste (optional); or use dried oregano and basil blend for traditional pizza notes

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Spread pizza sauce on one side of each slice of bread.

Assembly

  • Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce on each slice.
  • Add pepperoni slices on one of the cheese-covered slices if desired.
  • Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.
  • Close the sandwich with the other slice of bread, sauce side down.

Cooking

  • Brush the outside of the sandwich with olive oil.
  • Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

Use low-moisture shredded mozzarella to avoid a soggy sandwich. Preheat the skillet thoroughly for the best results.
