Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 2 slices Bread Use sourdough, country white, or whole grain for sturdiness.
  • Enough to spread on both slices Butter Use salted or unsalted butter; mayonnaise is an alternative for crisping.
  • 1 tablespoon Hot honey Use store-bought or homemade hot honey with chili flakes.
  • 1 Apple, thinly sliced Use Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for balance; pear is an alternative.
  • 2 slices Cheddar cheese Sharp cheddar preferred; aged white cheddar or Gruyère as alternatives.
  • 2 slices Cooked beef (roast beef or steak) Use thinly sliced roast beef, leftover steak, or deli-style roast beef.
  • 2 slices Cooked bacon Cook until crisp; prosciutto or pancetta are possible swaps.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  • Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface to assemble the sandwich.

Layering the Filling

  • Layer the cheddar cheese on the unbuttered side of the bread, creating a melted base for the other ingredients.
  • Arrange apple slices evenly over the cheese.
  • Place two slices of cooked beef on top of the apple.
  • Add two slices of cooked bacon, arranging them to cover the surface.
  • Drizzle one tablespoon of hot honey over the layered ingredients.
  • Top with the remaining slice of bread, unbuttered side facing in.

Grilling the Sandwich

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat until hot.
  • Place the sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down.
  • Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Flip carefully using a spatula and press gently.
  • Remove when both sides are golden and the cheese is gooey.
  • Slice the sandwich in half and serve immediately.

Notes

Choose firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for crispness. Slice thinly for even melting. Use medium heat to avoid burning the bread while melting cheese. Butter edge-to-edge for perfect browning.
