  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Add a pinch for enhancing sweetness

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter, cold and cubed Frozen butter also works well for a flakier texture
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate chips Dark or semi-sweet for richer flavor
  • 1 Large egg
  • 3/4 cup Heavy cream Milk can be a lighter alternative
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract Enhances the overall flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips.

Mixing Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk together the egg, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Shaping and Baking

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.
  • Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to shape scones.
  • Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Enjoy warm!

Notes

Use cold or frozen butter for a flaky texture; this is key to achieving that layered effect. Do not overmix the dough; combine just until everything comes together to keep scones tender. Experiment with different types of chocolate chips or even dried fruits for variety. Brush the tops with cream before baking for a golden, shiny finish.
