Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter For richness; can substitute with margarine.
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 4 Large Eggs Essential for structure and leavening.

For the Seasoning

  • 1 cup Grated Gruyère Cheese Sharp cheddar or mozzarella can be alternative options.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper Freshly ground enhances flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg (optional) Adds warmth and depth.

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a saucepan, combine water, butter, and salt; bring to a boil.
  • Stir in flour until the mixture forms a ball.
  • Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Incorporate the Eggs and Cheese

  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in grated Gruyère cheese, black pepper, and nutmeg if using.

Bake the Cheese Puffs

  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.

Notes

Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to incorporate the eggs smoothly for a uniform batter. Ensure to cool the dough slightly before adding eggs; hot dough can cook the eggs. Do not open the oven door while baking, as it may cause the cheese puffs to deflate. Enjoy them fresh out of the oven for the best texture and flavor; they are perfect warm. Experiment with cheese varieties for different flavor profiles, such as blue cheese or feta.
